Novi Sad
Vojvodina's capital sits on the Danube opposite Petrovaradin Fortress.
The historic centre, galleries and fortress tell the story of a city shaped by the river and many communities.
Walk the riverside and fortress viewpoints; plan museum visits with current opening information.
Novi Sad in Context
Location, the city’s character and what a traveller can actually explore.
History and identity
The Petrovaradin Fortress faces a city whose nineteenth- and twentieth-century cultural life earned Novi Sad its place in the history of Serbian literature and public life. The old streets near Liberty Square have a different scale and atmosphere from the riverfront.
Culture and landmarks
Walk Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska, visit the Museum of Vojvodina or galleries, and give Petrovaradin its own time for ramparts and views. Event programmes change each year, so festivals belong in a separate dated guide.
Nature and active time
The Danube riverfront, Štrand area and cycling routes offer an active city day. Fruška Gora and its monasteries, forests and wine villages are a full separate outing.
Where to stay
Stay in or near the old centre if walking and evening dining are your priorities; check bridges and crossing time if choosing Petrovaradin. Larger hotels and apartments serve different budgets and travel styles.
