Fortresses in Their Landscape
Explore the theme before choosing an individual place.
The river and the frontier
Many Serbian strongholds sit beside major routes: Petrovaradin and Smederevo above the Danube, Maglič over the Ibar, Niš on the Nišava. Their setting explains their military and political role as clearly as their surviving walls.
Not all sites are alike
A walk through the active urban setting of Niš Fortress differs from an archaeological landscape at Stari Ras or an approach to the high ruins of Maglič. Use the individual guide for historical context, terrain and the current visiting arrangement.
Pairing places sensibly
Petrovaradin belongs with Novi Sad; Pirot Kale with Pirot; Smederevo and Golubac can anchor a longer Danube journey. A day becomes richer when it gives the neighbouring town or landscape time as well as the fortress.
